...conserving biological diversity through research

Home

The Southern Sierra Research Station is a non-profit organization located in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains. We aim to understand the biological processes that control population sizes and species diversity by conducting basic and applied research. In collaboration with government, academic, and conservation organizations, we create and interpret scientific knowledge to inform environmental policy and encourage public appreciation of the region.

2009 Southern Sierra Research Station Costa Rica Field Trip

Feb. 1 - 14, 2009

Join us on an exciting birding trip to the south Pacific of Costa Rica. This is primarily a birdwatching trip, but we will spend time viewing monkeys, lizards, butterflies, insects, plants, and learning tropical ecology. We will begin near San Jose, go to the Pacific Coast, and work our way south. We will visit Carara National Park, the coastal forest near Dominical, and the outer edge of the Osa Peninsula. Next, we'll spend several days at the Wilson Botanical Gardens, and cool off with a few nights in the highlands of the Rio Savegre area. We'll end with another night near San Jose, a day birding north of San Jose, and a dinner at our friend Alberto's house. We will stay two nights at most locations, with single night stays at a few places. There is a lot of ground to cover on the southern Pacific coast! We are offering a single supplemental day visit to Tapanti National Park, on the Atlantic slope of the country.

Cost: $3050. Includes accommodations, transportation, meals, and entry fees within Costa Rica. Airfare to Costa Rica, tips, and exit tax not included.
