Willow Flycatcher Workshop Information Saturday & Sunday, May 19 & 20, 2012 Thank you for registering for the Willow Flycatcher survey training workshop. Please view the workshop schedule, the Southwestern Willow Flycatcher survey protocol, a protocol update, survey forms (.doc or .pdf), and USFWS permit information at our Workshop page. Bring a copy of the protocol and review it before the workshop, so that we may answer any questions. Also, please look at the USGS Southwestern Willow Flycatcher website prior to the workshop to become familiar with Southwestern Willow Flycatcher vocalizations: http://sbsc.wr.usgs.gov/cprs/research/projects/swwf/cprsmain.asp After the workshop, you need to obtain your permits from your state wildlife agency and from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit applications are available on-line at: http://permits.fws.gov/ The workshop is located at the Kern River Preserve (KRP) and the South Fork Elementary School, both located on Highway 178 in the mountains east of Bakersfield near Lake Isabella. On Saturday, we will meet in the cafeteria of the South Fork School at 1:30 pm, which is about 2 1/2 miles east of the KRP and on the corner of Highway 178 and Fay Ranch Road. For more information about the area, directions to the KRP, and a list of the motels in the area please use the www.natureali.org/accommodations.htm website. There is limited camping available at the KRP, so please call us (760-378-3345) ahead to reserve a spot for camping (suggested $10 donation). Bring the following gear with you to the workshop: binoculars, rubber boots (optional), hiking boots, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, and mosquito repellent. Also to help reduce waste, please bring a water bottle and coffee mug. We will provide water, coffee and tea on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. In May, the weather in the Kern River Valley can be highly variable. We could have a late winter storm, or temperatures in the 90’s. Typically, the daytime temperatures are in the high 80’s to low 90’s and nighttime temperatures in the 50’s. Please be prepared for both hot and cold temperatures. If you haven’t already sent in your workshop fee, please send a check by May 14 to secure your reservation, made payable to the Southern Sierra Research Station. If you have further questions, please contact Mary at (760) 378-3345 or email at mjwhitfield.ssrsATgmail.com. |
